From “Galley Kitchen” to Heart of the Home: 5 Renovations That Will Change Your Life

The kitchen is no longer a hidden room just for cooking. Today, it’s the headquarters of any Barcelona home: it’s where the first coffee is sipped, where friends catch up, and where daily magic happens.
If yours feels cramped, dark, or simply “dated,” you don’t need more square meters—you need better ideas. Here are the most powerful proposals to transform your kitchen into a magazine-worthy space.

1. Say Goodbye to Walls: The ‘Open Plan’ Concept
This is the star renovation for apartments in Eixample or Gràcia. Tearing down the wall between the kitchen and living room doesn’t just bring in natural light; it eliminates the feeling of isolation.
    • Pro Tip: Use an island or a peninsula as a visual border. You’ll gain a breakfast nook and extra workspace you’ll appreciate every single morning.

2. Smart Storage (Right up to the Ceiling)
Clutter is the ultimate enemy of aesthetics. A smart renovation makes use of every single inch.
    • Column cabinets: Replace traditional cupboards with floor-to-ceiling columns. You’ll get an infinite pantry and a much cleaner, more minimalist visual line.
    • Pull-out drawers: Forget about bending down to find a pot at the back of the cabinet. Full-extension systems keep everything within easy reach.

3. The Worktop Revolution: Sustainability and Durability
It’s not just about looks anymore; it’s about performance. Porcelain surfaces perfectly mimic marble or cement but can withstand scratches and heat.
  • Porcelain materials: They are the absolute trend for 2026. They perfectly mimic marble or cement, but you can chop directly on them or place a hot pot down without worrying about burns or scratches.
  • Natural textures: Matte finishes are winning the battle against gloss, providing a much more elegant and cozy feel.
4. Layered Lighting: More Than Just a Ceiling Light
The key lies in three levels: LED strips under the wall cabinets for work, and statement pendant lights to add personality and warmth.
  1. Task lighting: LED strips under the wall cabinets to illuminate the cutting area directly.
  2. Ambient lighting: Statement pendant lights over the island to add personality.
  3. General lighting: Recessed spotlights in the ceiling that avoid annoying shadows.

5. Faucets and Details That Make a Difference
Replacing a standard tap with a matte black or brushed gold design can instantly modernize the entire kitchen. Pair this with integrated appliances for a seamless look.

Decoding the price of a full kitchen renovation. 2026

⚡ Budget Summary (TL;DR):

  • Price range: From €2,500 (Face-lift) to over €15,000 (high-end).
  • Key items: Furniture (35%), Countertop (20%), and Appliances (20%).
  • Estimated time: 2 to 4 weeks depending on complexity.

How much does it really cost to renovate a kitchen in Barcelona in 2026? There is no single answer, but there is a logical breakdown that will help you avoid surprises. At Reformas Barcelona, we break down every euro invested.

What determines the price of your new kitchen?

The budget depends not only on the square meters but also on the quality of materials and the complexity of the technical installations.

Concept Estimated Price % of Total
Furniture (modules and hardware) €3,500 – €7,000 35%
Countertop (Silestone, Neolith, Granite) €1,200 – €3,500 20%
Installations (Light, water, gas) €1,500 – €2,500 15%
Tiling and Flooring €1,000 – €2,000 10%

1. Furniture: The heart of the investment

The price varies drastically if you choose laminates (budget-friendly), lacquered finishes, or natural woods. Soft-close hinges and full-extension drawers are an investment in durability that we always recommend.

2. The Countertop: Aesthetics and resistance

Today, ceramic surfaces (such as Dekton or Neolith) lead the market due to their heat resistance, although their price is higher than traditional quartz.

3. Installations: What you don’t see, but matters

If your kitchen is more than 15 years old, it is mandatory to renew plumbing and electricity to comply with current regulations and avoid breakdowns under the new furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions about kitchen prices

Is it possible to renovate a kitchen for less than €6,000?

It is difficult if we are talking about a full renovation. For that price, you can do a “face-lift” (painting cabinets, changing the countertop), but not a full replacement of installations and furniture with professional guarantees.

How long does a kitchen renovation in Barcelona actually take?

A full renovation typically lasts between 3 and 5 weeks. The timeline depends on the delivery speed of the furniture and the countertop (which is measured once the cabinets are installed). In Barcelona, if the renovation involves structural changes, you must also account for the processing time of the Minor Works License with the City Council.

Which is more expensive: the cabinets or the countertop?

Generally, cabinetry represents the largest expense (approx. 35-40% of the total) due to the number of modules and hardware. However, if you choose latest-generation porcelain surfaces (like Dekton or Neolith) for a large kitchen, the cost of the countertop can match or even exceed that of basic furniture.

Can the kitchen layout (sink or stove) be easily changed?

Yes, but this is what most increases plumbing and electrical costs. Moving the sink drain requires creating a slope for the pipes through the floor or walls, which involves breaking more surface area. It is an investment worth making to improve ergonomics, but it should be budgeted for from the start.

Renovation, distribution, and furnishing solutions for small spaces

Soluciones reformas espacios prequeños 1

A growing trend nowadays when planning home changes is to combine all rooms into a main one where everything is visible and close at hand, concealing only bathrooms and bedrooms.

Soluciones de reformas para espacios pequeños 5

This is mainly due to three factors:

– Firstly, it is an excellent solution for small spaces. Comfortable and practical.

– Secondly, it is a great way to save in these times of crisis. Fewer square meters + more imagination: More space at a lower cost.

– The third factor is undoubtedly the influence from Nordic countries like Sweden or Norway —mainly via IKEA— which shows us a comprehensive, practical, and uncomplicated way of conceiving living spaces.

Therefore, our proposal today consists of giving you a few simple keys with which you can undertake the necessary renovations to “debut your home” without moving from the sofa. Always keeping quality, price, and results in mind.

Do you really need a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a sitting room, and a pantry-closet crammed with things you rarely use and where you never find anything?

Simply, eliminate them.

Soluciones de reformas para espacios pequeños 2

– Prioritize space. By removing walls and partitions, you will achieve a wide, comfortable, and bright place where you will feel at ease.

– Create spaces with auxiliary and modular furniture: an office corner under a window, sofa beds to use as an extra bed, poufs that turn into seats, footrests, or side tables according to your needs. Folding tables…

– Avoid large and heavy structures like bookshelves and racks that take up an entire wall. Instead, use light and versatile furniture or add-ons.

Soluciones reformas espacios prequeños 6

– A good trick to provide a sense of uniformity and spaciousness is to opt for the same style throughout the room: you will be able to place chairs, tables, and other furniture in different places without them looking out of place.

– If you have small children, create a space for them: Visually separate it from the rest using removable elements such as screens or modular units with wheels and drawers. This way, they can pick up and organize everything themselves quickly.

– In children’s bedrooms, use your imagination when it comes to making the most of the space.

Advices to find a refurbishment company in Barcelona

⚡ Quick Summary (TL;DR):

  • Verification: Always check for liability insurance and REA registration.
  • Quote: Demand detailed line items; never accept a “fixed price” without a breakdown.
  • Guarantee: Ensure the contract includes completion deadlines and penalties for delays.

Renovating your home is one of the most significant investments of your life. However, fear of delays, unexpected costs, or poor finishes often holds many owners back. How do you separate the professionals from the amateurs?

At En A. Barcelona Reformas, s.l, after years of executing comprehensive projects, we have summarized the 5 key pillars to choosing a trustworthy company and avoiding unpleasant surprises.

1. Demand REA and Liability Insurance

Don’t take risks. A legal company must be registered with the Registry of Accredited Companies (REA). Additionally, request a copy of their current liability insurance. If a water leak or an accident occurs during the project and the company is not insured, you will be the legally responsible party.

2. Detailed Quotes: Avoid “Estimates”

A professional quote is not just a sheet with a final price. It must be broken down by items: demolition, plumbing, electricity, carpentry, and finishes. Each item must specify units, measurements, qualities, and unit prices. If the quote is vague (“Bathroom: €4,000”), extra costs are guaranteed.

3. Visit Real Projects or Ask for References

Instagram photos can be deceiving. Ask the company to show you an ongoing project or provide the contact details of a recent client. Seeing how they work (cleanliness, punctuality, order) says more about them than any commercial catalog.

4. Contract with Penalties for Delays

Paper accepts everything, but words are gone with the wind. Sign a contract that specifies the start and delivery dates. Include a financial penalty clause for each week of unjustified delay. A serious professional will have no problem signing it.

Looking for peace of mind in your next renovation?

En A. Barcelona Reformas, s.l, we comply with all legal and technical requirements so you only have to enjoy the result.

We have our own in-house staff, no subcontractors

📋 Checklist: Before signing anything, check this:

  • Do they have Liability Insurance? (Ask for the latest receipt).
  • Are they in the REA? (Registry of Accredited Companies).
  • Is the quote itemized? (No global prices).
  • Is there a deadline in the contract? (With delay penalties).
  • Have they given you references from real projects? (Photos or visits).

“The difference between a stressful renovation and a dream come true is usually the choice of the company. Don’t just look for the lowest price; look for the team that gives you the best technical and legal guarantees.”

Frequently asked questions when hiring a renovation company

1. What is the difference between a company with sales agents and one with in-house construction staff?
Many quotes fail because they are prepared by a salesperson who doesn’t understand the technical challenges of the project, and the labor is subcontracted. Choosing a company with its own in-house construction team for the initial measurement ensures that the quote is technically feasible, avoiding cost overruns and unexpected delays once work begins.

2. Is it important for the company to have experience in my specific district?
Absolutely, yes. In Barcelona, renovating in El Gòtic (centuries-old structures) is not the same as in Sants or Les Corts. A company with district experts knows the local regulations, required permits, and technical solutions for elements like the “Catalan vault” or stone walls, saving you from legal and structural issues.

3. How can I ensure the budget won’t increase mid-renovation?
The key is to demand “Fixed-Price Contracts.” Be wary of generic items like “to be determined” or “estimated.” A professional company breaks down every material and labor cost after a detailed technical audit, committing by contract not to change the final price unless the client’s needs change.

4. Why is a contractually guaranteed deadline essential?
The biggest complaint in the industry is projects that “never end.” By choosing a company that offers a Guaranteed Completion Date, you ensure they have total control over logistics and staffing. This is vital if you are paying rent or have a fixed move-in date, providing you with financial and personal peace of mind.

5. What should a professional renovation quote include?
It must be broken down by categories (demolition, plumbing, electricity, finishes) with exact quantities, material qualities, unit prices, and the estimated completion time.

6. Is it better to buy the materials myself or have the company provide them?
Ideally, the company should manage the base materials (cement, pipes) to ensure the installation warranty. For finishes (faucets, tiles), you can choose them yourself, but let the company coordinate the logistics to avoid delays.

7. How to avoid last-minute cost overruns?
The key is a fixed contract based on an actual on-site measurement. Avoid “estimated” quotes. If there are changes during the renovation, always demand a written addendum to the quote before they are carried out.

These are the interior design trends for renovations in Barcelona in 2025

Design trends for interior renovations in Barcelona in 2025 are marked by a blend of modern aesthetics and practical functionality, with a focus on sustainability. Here are some of the most prominent ones:

1. Natural and sustainable materials: The aim is to integrate eco-friendly materials such as wood, bamboo, natural stone, and marble. These materials provide warmth and a connection to nature, in addition to being durable and recyclable.

2. Neutral colors and earth tones: Colors like beige, sand, terracotta, and olive green are trending. They create cozy and balanced environments, promoting calm and serenity within the spaces.

3. Minimalist style: Less is more. Open spaces with few pieces of furniture, clean lines, and an orderly aesthetic remain key in renovations. Functionality takes center stage, eliminating the unnecessary.

4. Smart home systems (Domotics): Home technology is becoming increasingly relevant. Lighting, climate control, and security systems integrated and controlled via mobile devices or voice are being implemented, improving comfort and energy efficiency.

5. Modern industrial aesthetic: The combination of materials like metal and concrete in contrast with warm elements is making a comeback. The industrial style is reinvented with more sophisticated finishes and brighter spaces.

screenshot

6. Open and multifunctional kitchens: Kitchens are becoming the heart of the home, integrating with the living or dining room. Priority is given to versatile spaces that allow for social interaction, with islands or breakfast bars as a focal point.

7. Natural lighting and large windows: The goal is to maximize the entry of natural light. Large windows, skylights, and sliding glass door systems allow for connecting the interior with the exterior while saving energy.

8. Multifunctional and modular furniture: In smaller spaces, modular and multifunctional furniture is essential. Beds that convert into sofas, folding tables, or shelving with hidden storage optimize the use of space.

These trends reflect the importance of creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally friendly homes.

How to get building permits in Barcelona (2026 Guide)

If you are planning a full renovation or a partial one, correctly processing your building license in Barcelona is the first step to avoid fines of up to €3,000 and work stoppages. In this guide, we explain the types of permits according to the Barcelona City Council.

In this article, we are going to explain how to obtain the ‘Assabentat d´obres’ in Barcelona.

1. Building Activity Notification (ASSU)

For most renovations in Barcelona that do not affect the structure or protected elements, the ASSU (Assabentat d´obres) is used.

It is a free and immediate process for:

  • Bathroom and kitchen renovations.
  • Changing flooring, painting, and interior woodwork.
  • Renewal of electrical or plumbing installations.

2. How to process the ‘Assabentat’ online: Step by step

To obtain the permit immediately, access the City Council’s Electronic Office. It is a free process, no architect is needed and it can be requested via Internet, simply with your personal details and the property’s cadastral reference number. Follow these steps:

  1. Identification: Enter the City Council’s E-Office. Describe the type of work (bathroom renovation, parquet installation, etc.) and under the type of activity select “works” (obras).
  2. Location: Enter the address and the Cadastral Reference (Referencia Catastral). The system will check if the building has heritage protection.
  3. Work Details: Select “Guided Questions” (Preguntas Guiadas), then “intervention inside a building”, “works inside a home”, and “Without affecting distribution or structure” (This process only allows works that do not touch structural elements).
  4. Applicant Details: Fill in your name, surname, ID/NIE, phone number, email, address, and representation (if applicable). After completing all fields, you will obtain the Permit.
  5. Obtaining: After filling in all the data and clicking continue, you can download the PDF with the case file number. You now have your legal license! You will also receive it by email.
⚠️ Mandatory Notice: You must print the document and post it in a visible place in the building’s entrance (portería) during the works to avoid sanctions from the City Police (Guardia Urbana).

Frequently Asked Questions about Licenses

1. Is it mandatory to request a permit to paint or change the flooring?
Yes. In Barcelona, for aesthetic works such as painting, changing flooring, or tiling, you must process the “Assabentat” (Immediate Notification). Although it is a free process and is obtained instantly, it is mandatory for the work to be legal in the event of a possible inspection by the City Police (Guardia Urbana).

2. What happens if I perform a renovation without a license?
Carrying out works without the corresponding permit can lead to fines ranging from €300 to €3,000 for minor works. Additionally, the City Council can order the immediate sealing of the works, and you could face issues with your home insurance if an accident were to occur during the renovation.

3. How long does it take for the “Assabentat” permit to be approved?
The process is instant. Once you complete the form on the City Council’s Electronic Office and validate the data, the system generates a PDF with the case file number. From that very moment, you have legal permission to start the work.

4. Do I need an architect for a minor work notification?
For a standard “Assabentat” (kitchens, bathrooms, floors), it is not necessary to have a technical project or an architect’s signature. However, if the work affects the structure (load-bearing walls), facades, or common elements, then you will need a technician to sign the project.

5. How long is the building permit valid for in Barcelona?
Normally, the minor works notification is valid for 3 months to execute the works. If the work takes longer than that, you must request an extension or submit a new notification.

Budget of Electricity in Housing

Why update the electrical installation in a home

If you are planning to carry out renovations at home, or if you are thinking about painting or making minor repairs, take the opportunity to change your old electrical installation. At Reformas Barcelona, we know the importance of having an electrical system correctly installed and in compliance with current regulations.

Our specialists will inform you when it comes to renovating and adapting your home’s installation to current standards. Often, the electrical system – especially in second-hand houses or those more than “x” years old – tends to become obsolete and fail to meet regulations. Furthermore, an outdated system is a continuous source of problems and, more importantly: it leaves us exposed to a total lack of safety.

Now you can take advantage of numerous benefits

As this is a renovation within the home to improve safety and energy efficiency, part of its cost is subsidized by the different Autonomous Communities (CCAA) and carries significant tax deductions.

When is the right time to change an electrical installation?

If the system starts to cause problems at different points and repeatedly, the time has come to take action. Not only are we wasting money, but we are also compromising our health due to the high risk of accidents.

This task must be performed exclusively by specialists. At Reformas Barcelona, we advise and guide you on the most suitable solution for your case. Our professionals will take care of minimizing inconveniences and will ensure a job with all guarantees in the shortest possible time.

Remember that there are many advantages and savings when installing a proper electricity system. At Reformas Barcelona, we make sure your home shines with its own light once again. Thank you for your trust.

instalacion-ventanas

No inflamables.

License and Permit Management: What do you need to renovate in Barcelona?

Carrying out a full renovation in Barcelona without the proper permits can lead to heavy fines or the immediate suspension of the works. Building regulations in our city are strict but necessary to guarantee the safety of the buildings.
According to current **2026** regulations, most procedures are managed through the **Barcelona City Council E-Office (Sede Electrónica)**. Depending on the scope of your project, the procedure will be one of these three:

1. Assabentat d’obres (Immediate Notification)

This is the simplest procedure for **minor works** that do not modify the structure, the layout, or the facade (for example: changing the floor, painting, or renovating the kitchen/bathroom while keeping the original location of the elements).
    • Advantage: Obtained instantly online and free of charge.

Do you only need the Assabentat d’obres?

VIEW STEP-BY-STEP ASSABENTAT GUIDE →

2. Minor Works Communication (Type I or II)

This permit is mandatory when the project involves **changing the flat’s layout** (removing walls), affecting common elements, or a complete renewal of utility installations.
  • Requirement: Requires payment of municipal taxes and the involvement of a **licensed technician** (Architect or Technical Architect) to sign the technical documentation.
3. Major Works License (Llicència d’Obres Majors)

Reserved for major structural changes (such as opening gaps in load-bearing walls), surface extensions, or interventions in buildings with **heritage protection**, very common in districts like **Eixample, Gràcia, and Ciutat Vella**.

💰 How much do municipal taxes cost in Barcelona (2026)?

To give you a clear reference of the administrative costs for your renovation, here is a summary of the most common municipal taxes and fees:

Permit Type Processing Fee (Approx.) ICIO Tax (On budget) Approval Time
Assabentat Free €0 (Exempt in most cases) Immediate
Minor Works (Type II) €60 – €300* 4% of PEM (Budget) 1 month (approx.)
Major Works Based on budget 4% of PEM (Budget) 3 to 6 months
Bags/Containers ~€12/day per bag Depends on zone (City Center)

*Fees vary by square footage and district. ICIO is the Tax on Constructions, Installations, and Works.

>How do we manage this at A. Barcelona Reformas S.L.?
We understand that bureaucracy can be stressful. Therefore, our technical team assumes full administrative responsibility for your renovation:

  • In-house Technical Project: We have licensed architects to draft and sign all necessary blueprints.
  • End-to-end Processing: We manage all documentation via the Barcelona City Council Procedures Portal.
  • Tax Management: We handle the calculation and payment of the ICIO tax.
  • Public Space & Debris: We request permits for containers or waste bags, preventing fines from the City Police (Guardia Urbana).
  • ITE Advisory: If your building is old and has a pending Technical Building Inspection (ITE), we ensure the renovation meets all specific requirements.

⚠️ Do you live in a protected building in Barcelona?

Not all renovations in Barcelona follow the same process. If your property is located in a district with high historical value, the Barcelona City Council applies much stricter urban regulations:

  • L’Eixample: The district with the most iconic fincas regias and Catalan vaulted ceilings (volta catalana). Any layout modification or restoration of original features usually requires a detailed technical report.

  • Ciutat Vella (Gothic, Raval, Born): Due to the buildings’ age and narrow streets, debris logistics are complex, and structural control is strictly enforced to ensure safety.

  • Gràcia: Many properties are listed as heritage sites. Even simple window replacements may require a specific license if they affect the building’s protected facade.

Expert Tip: Before applying for your Assabentat, we check your property’s Cadastral Reference to confirm if the building has any level of protection (Level A, B, or C). This prevents unexpected fines and administrative delays.

📋 Required Documentation: What should you have ready?

To allow us to start the procedures with the Barcelona City Council today, we will need you to provide the following documents:
  • Owner’s ID/NIE: Copy of both sides.
  • Property Deeds or “Nota Simple”: To prove ownership of the property.
  • Cadastral Reference: You can find it on your latest IBI (property tax) receipt.
  • Latest IBI Receipt: Required to verify census data.
  • Signed Authorization: A simple document authorizing A. Barcelona Reformas s.l. to act on your behalf at the Electronic Office.
  • Current Floor Plan (if available): Helps our technical team speed up the quote and project.

How to choose colors to paint my house. 7 steps
